taking the long way

I'm a historical landscape architect, photographer, writer, recovering graphic designer and journalist, pop culture enthusiast, and unabashed sports fan. I started this blog to keep in touch with friends from Boston when I moved back to my hometown of Portland, Oregon. I wanted a way to share stories that I would have otherwise shared over drinks or while watching a Red Sox game. In my dream world I wouldn't have to choose between living on the west coast or east coast. This blog allows me to zip up the distance between the two.

natefest Every year around this time my friend Nate organizes a fest in his honor - to get friends together and to celebrate his birthday. I was lucky enough to be able to attend the 15th annual Natefest which was held at the Olympic Hotel in Centralia, Washington this past weekend. I tried to attend last year, but caught some sort of nasty flu on my return home from Thanksgiving in Mexico... yes it could have been the swine flu. And yes, as many people have joked I could have been patient zero. Though no one I know got sick after...

beantown and blizzards The storm hitting the east coast this weekend is being compared to the 2003 President's Day Storm, which served as my own winter weather christening. My favorite snowy days included walking through drifts of snow around my neighborhood followed by fish and chips at Matt Murphy's or sledding in Boston Common followed by macaroni and cheese at Silvertone. In honor of the blizzard bearing down on New England I wanted to repost my memories of the 2003 storm. "Nearly seven years ago I moved to Boston. I was excited about my new job, but honestly had not warmed to Beantown....
